The exploration emphasis in the Great Basin has, of necessity, moved mainly into the Pediment areas. The USGS has said that there is the same area of outcropping pre Cretaceous rocks as there is under less than 500m of cover. This could be about 100,000 sq. qm. Exploration of Thinly Covered Pediments can be a rewarding effort, but selection of areas that have shallow depths to basement has often been discouraging. Unfortunately, many holes have been drilled through 100's of metres of alluvium with out hitting pre Cretaceous rocks.  In some cases 1,000m holes have been drilled , totally in alluvium.
A rational Pediment Exploration Program ust integrate all available data, including the Geophysical Data, to be effective in this exploration market.

The following is a Power Point presentation from the SME-SEG 200 meeting. Additional text for each slide will be added soon.
Geophysics should NOT be the "tool of last resort"!
